Abstract

Oral health is an important part of the overall body health. Mental and physical limitations that occur mental retarded children made the children commonly require some assistance of parents in maintaining their oral hygiene. An indicator of oral hygiene that commonly used to measure the degree of oral hygiene is Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S), obtained from summing debris index and calculus index. The purpose of this study was to know the relation between characteristics and sosio economic factors with OHI-S index in mild mental retardation students at SLB C Karya Ibu Palembang. This was descriptive analytic study with cross sectional design. Subjects were 42 mild mental retardation students SLB C Karya Ibu Palembang obtained by using Total Sampling method. The data collection obtained from examining the OHI-S Index of students with mild mental retardation and giving questionnaires to parents. Analysis were processed by Chi-Square test for probability of 95% (α=0,05). The result of relation between charakteristics and socio economic factors between OHI-S index: Gender (p=0,42), Age (p=0,36), Parents academic (p=0,54), Parents income (p=015), Parents knowledge (p=0,09) and Parents character (p=0,31). Conclusion; there is no relation relation between characteristics and sosio economic factors with OHI-S index in mild mental retardation students at SLB C Karya Ibu Palembang.
