Abstract

Background: Oral bad habits were abnormal human habits that caused stresses and tendencies that persist and were repeated continuously and affected craniofacial growth. At the age of 4-6 years, oral bad habits could affect the normal growth of the jaw, interfered with cranial growth, and the physiology of occlusion so it had to be stopped immediately. Parental knowledge was an important factor in the occurrence of children's oral bad habits. Efforts to increase knowledge of oral bad habits could be done by counseling with certain media such as videos and sound slides. Method: The type of research conducted was quasi-experimental with samples from parents of children in Matahari Kindergarten Palembang, totaled 42 people. The sample was divided into two groups which were the counseling group with video and the counseling group with sound slide. Samples were given a questionnaire before (pretest) and after (posttest) counseling was given. Analysis of the difference in the pretest and posttest scores was carried out with the dependent t-test, while the comparison of the score of the video group and the sound slides was carried out with an independent t-test. Results: There was a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores of the two groups (p-value = 0,000). The results also showed that there was a significant difference between the difference in the average value of video and sound slides groups (p-value = 0.002). Conclusion: Video media was more effective in increasing knowledge of children's oral bad habits compared to sound slide media in Matahari Kindergarten Palembang.
