Abstract

This research about synthesis and characterization of hydroxyapatite from red snapper fish bone (Lutjanus sp.) and the effect of chitosan addition on hydroxyapatite mechanical properties has been done. This research aimed to investigated the effect of temperature and calcination duration on hydroxyapatite synthesis and the effect of chitosan addition on the mechanical properties of hydroxyapatite. The synthesis of hydroxyapatite was carried out with precursors Ca(OH)2 and (NH4)2HPO4 and composited with chitosan. The precipitated HAp is calcined with varrying temperature and calcination time. Characterization of HAp crystalline structures was determined using XRD and characterization of mechanical properties for hardness was determined using vickers hardness and compressive strength was determined by autograph. The XRD characterization results show the optimum condition of HAp synthesis at 500°C for 2 hour. The result of mechanical properties showed that the composite HAp-chitosan with the increasing of chitosan concentration cause increasing in compressive strength but decrease in hardness.
