Abstract

Banana bunchy top disease is a very important disease of banana and has been distributed to all banana growing areas all over the world. Infected banana plant will not produce fruit when being infected at younger stage, but might produce unmarketable fruit when being infected at later stage of development. The disease was transmitted by banana aphid Pentalonia nigronervosa or by infected sucker. However, under field conditions the vector is very difficult to find even though the disease continuously spread and the disease incidence is significant. Therefore, there is a doubt that the aphid has alternative host that permanently and continuously living in the surrounding areas of banana plant. The research was conducted in the Insectarium of the Department of Plant Pests and Diseases, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Sriwijaya. The research was conducted from September to November 2016. The objectives of this research were to determine the growth and development of banana aphids P. nigronervosa in different parts of Araceous plants and to know the species of Araceous plant most preferable to the aphid P. nigronervosa. The experiment was arranged in a factorial completely randomized design (FCRD) consisted of two factors and ten replications. The first factor was the species of Araceous plants consisted of five levels namely taro (Colocasia esculenta), blue taro (Xanthosoma sagittifolium), white-green ornamental taro (Caladium bicolor), red-green ornamental taro (Caladium bicolor) and rodent tuber (Typhonium flagelliforme). The second factor was part of Araceousplant consisted of two levels, namely leaf and petiole. The results showed that P. nigronervosa could normally live in all the five Araceous plants indicated by the production of new nymph in the first day after adult infestation. The results also showed that leaves of blue taro was more preferable by P. nigronervosa.
