Abstract

FAHMI ILMAN HALIM. Characteristics of Thitonia Diversifolia Leave Powder as Traditional Medicine (Supervised by GATOT PRIYANTO and BASUNI HAMZAH) The aims of this research was to determine the effects of drying temperature and drying time on characteristics of physical and chemical thitonia diversifolia leave powder. The research was conducted in the Chemical Laboratory of Agricultural, Department of Agricultural Technology, Agricultural Faculty, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya from july 2014 to September 2014. The research was performed as split factorial based on completely randomized design with two treatments and three repetitions. Treatment included drying temperature as first factor (55oC and 65oC). Four levels of drying time (2, 4, 6, and 8 hours) were selected as second factor. The parameters observed were moisture content, ash content, yield, bulk density, water absorption, browning index, antioxidant activity, and qualitative test of phytochemicals. Results showed that drying temperature had significant effect on the yield and water absorption. Drying time had significant effect on the moisture content, yield, water absorption, and bulk density. Interaction between drying temperature and drying time had no significant effect on all of the parameters. The best treatment of thitonia diversifolia leaves powder is treatment on drying temperature at 65oC and 8 hours of drying time. The characteristics were 9.30 % of moisture content, 9.66 % of ash content, 864.09 % of water absorbtion, 0.64 of browning index, 12.81% of yield, 0.043 μg/mL of antioxidant activity, 0.43 g/mL of bulk density and contains active compounds such as phenols, flavonoids, tannins, and saponins.
