Abstract

The Jacobson van den Berg Building is identified as one of heritage building in Sekanak, Palembang. The Jacobson building has been abandoned and currently unused. This condition can lead to the decay of the building which slowly damaging its original structure and physical condition. The Jacobson Building has an important historical value in its role as evidence of trade facilities at the city of Palembang in 1920 to 1950s. This relates to the initial function of the Jacobson Building as an office for the Dutch trading company Jacobson van den Berg & Co. Therefore to preserve historical evidence and objects of heritage buildings, conservation efforts need to be made at the Jacobson Building. Conservation efforts is carried out with the adaptive-reuse method. This method aims to conserve a heritage building by infill or replacing old functions to new functions that are in line with the present. The method is carrying necessary physical modifications to the heritage building without changing the original architecture style of building. Through this method Jacobson Building is refunctioned as a Heritage Development Centre of Palembang City. New function requires additional facilities connected to the Jacobson Building. Exhibition concept is proposed as a basic design guideline for the new facilities. Exhibition concept aims to make Jacobson Building as a point of interest (in architectural way) instead of new facilities through architecture concept of compatiblecontrast. Through these methods and concepts, the existence of additional facilities and physical modification still makes Jacobson Building to be the main architecture in design , and the Jacobson Building can be functionally active again.
