Abstract

Composite resin was a tooth-colored restoration material that was widely used in the dentistry. Modification of composite resin produces a new type of composite resin that could be filled with a depth of 4 mm known as bulk-fill composite resin. The hardness of composite resin influenced by the exposure time and light intensity of the light curing unit. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the exposure time of light emitting diode on under-surface hardness of resin composite bulk-fill. This experimental laboratory used post test only design where 30 bulk-fill composite resin samples (Bulk Fill Posterior: 3M ESPE) were divided into three groups (5 seconds, 10 seconds and 20 seconds exposure time). The three groups were polymerized on the top surface using light emitting diode (Elipar ™ Deep Cure LED Curing Light). The samples were immersed in a petri dish containing distilled water for 24 hours at 37 ̊C. Under-surface hardness of bulk-fill composite resin measured by the Vicker's Hardness Tester which is set at 500g in 10 seconds. Data were analyzed by Kruskal Wallis and post hoc Dunn-Bonferroni. The results of the Kruskal Wallis test showed that there was an effect of the difference in light emitting diode exposure time against the under-surface hardness of bulk-fill resin composite. The results of the post hoc Dunn-bonferroni test showed that there were significant differences (p <0.05) between groups with a 5 second exposure time (84.53 ± 8.75) with 10 seconds (119.637 ± 13.97) and 5 seconds with 20 seconds (143.182 ± 20.66), but there was no significant difference in the group with exposure time of 10 seconds with 20 seconds. The difference exposure time of light emitting diode could affected the under-surface hardness of bulk-fill composite resin.
