Abstract

The Port University Summit is truly special. It brings us, academician, all together to seek innovative research, and talented persons to cope with all the challenges, such as Intelligent Transport System, Port city reformation, new industries, new social responsibility, and academic development. Sriwijaya University is established in 1960. The Name of Sriwijaya University was adopted from the Sriwijaya Kingdom, which is very popular in ancient time as the Maritime Kingdom. Archaeological and historical evidence was found the Prasasti Kedukan Bukit that strengthens the proof. Sriwijaya kingdom was born on 16 June in 682. The Sriwijaya Kingdom was a maritime kingdom since Sriwijaya was a center of Budha religion, leading in trading along Malaya and Malaka Strait and Sunda Strait, Java, and Sumatera Island. Palembang is a capital city of South Sumatera Province which has Boombaru Port, which is located inland on the riverbank of Musi river. With the traffic forecast in 2007 is 82.546 TEU’s. Yard Occupancy Ratio (YOR) almost reaches 65%. The distance of the dock is only 750 meters, which implies that it can only accommodate three 250-meter vessels, while the loading and unloading equipment is too restricted. South Sumatera has many products of commodities such as rubber, coal, CPO, fisheries, agriculture, etc. However, the increase of 30% in the volume of goods in line with the bad conditions of road infrastructures to the hinterland in South Sumatera have caused difficulties to press dwelling time at the Boom Baru Port of Palembang. In this condition, the target of the company’s profit for the first half of the year 2017 of US$ 2.1 million (IDR 31 billion) was achieved and even exceeds the target by 5.0 percent. We also need to protect our resource base. In fact, many products like (rubber, CPO) are carried by small boats through small rivers to the estuary that is close to Singapore Port, by trading free on board (FOB) system. We, as an academician realize that there must be a lot of efforts to be done to reform our city port. The potentials of South Sumatera have urged us as a university to think about the basic need to develop new, modernized Port with the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) support.
