Abstract
The small and medium-sized textile enterprises (SMEs) have experienced significant development; however, they still generate wastewater that is discharged directly into water bodies without adequate treatment. Therefore, an effective waste management method is required, one of which is adsorption using composite materials. The composite was prepared using graphite, KMnO₄, and manganese (II) acetate solution. MnO₂ was formed through a redox reaction between KMnO₄ and manganese (II) acetate. The adsorption process was carried out by adding 0.02 g of the composite or graphite into 20 mL of malachite green solution under specific variables, and the absorbance was measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Based on XRD, FT-IR, and BET characterizations, the preparation of the composite was successfully achieved. XRD analysis showed peaks at 26.540°, corresponding to graphite, and at 33.52°, indicating the presence of MnO₂. FT-IR analysis confirmed the presence of –OH, Mn–O, C=C, and C–H functional groups. BET analysis showed that the composite had a specific surface area of 44.080 m²/g. This study investigated the effects of pH variation and contact time, with adsorption kinetics as a parameter. The point of zero charge for the composite and graphite was found to be at pH 7.64. Optimal adsorption occurred at pH 4 for the composite and at pH 7 for graphite. The adsorption of malachite green by both materials followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The composite exhibited a higher adsorption capacity than graphite, with values of 16.804 mg/g and 14.944 mg/g, respectively.
