Abstract

A pre-experimental study was conducted to determine the Generic Science Ability (GSA) and mastery of concepts of biology education students on the topic of diffusion and osmosis and transpiration in plants through problem-based learning. This research involved a number of sixth semester students of biology education at one LPTK in South Sumatra as research subjects (n = 30). This study used the one-group pretest-posttest design. Data was collected using a set of 40 item multiple-choice written test, as well as a closed questionnaire with Likert scale. Research data was then analyzed using Kolmogorov-Smirnov test followed by paired t test. The results showed improvement in GSA and concept mastery significantly, with a significance value of p = 0.000 at ;1 = 0.025. Increased of concept mastery was included in the average category, with a value of n-gain 0.32. Increased category of GSA was average for sense of scale, mathematical modeling, logical inference, and symbolic, but low for causation relationship. Research results indicate that problem-based learning can improve biology prospective teachers on GSA and their concept mastery on the Diffusion-Osmosis and Transpiration in plant topics. In addition, problem-based instruction can encourage students positive attitude towards the two topics.
