Abstract

Hydrolysis of empety palm fruit bunch (EPFB) using sulfuric acid for bioethanol production has been conducted. EPFB was pretreated using ozon with flow rate of 50 g/menit for 100 minute, to reduce lignin content which determined by Chesson method. The result showed the percentage of lignin after pretreatment was 18%, while percentage of lignin before pretreatment was 38%. EPFB was then hydrolyzed using 0%, 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5%, 6% and 7% of sulfuric acid with and without heating at 100ºC. Glucose content produced hydrolyzate were analyzed by using Luff Schoorl method and HPLC. Result showed that the highest glucose obtained from pretreated EFPB hydrolyzed using sulfuric acid 6% with and without heating at 100ºC produced 2,34% (v/b) and 2,04% (v/b) respectively. HPLC data result that glucose produced as many as 0.676%. The highest glucose content sample was fermented using microbial agent Sacchaomyces cerevisiae, and ethanol produced by fermentation was determined using gas chromatography (GC). Fermentation resulted ethanol of 0,675% (v/v).
