Abstract

Introduction: Cheiloscopy or lip print studies is an alternative tool that can be used in forensic odontology for the identification of an individual, besides the other common techniques, such as dental records or DNA comparison. Lip prints show variations between sex, race, and also ethnics. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the predominant lip print patterns among Arab and Chinese ethnic. Methods: The study was conducted on 122 subjects, which comprised of 63 individuals of Arab and 59 of Chinese. The middle part of the lower lip was taken as study area by using lipstick and cellophane tape. Analysis of lip print pattern was done by using classification of Suzuki and Tsuchihashi. Data were statistically analyzed using the z-test for proportions. Results: This study showed that each subject has an unique lip print. Type I? lip print pattern was predominant in Arab and type I in Chinese population. Comparison of lip print patterns between Arab and Chinese ethnics showed statistically significant difference only in type I. Conclusion: Lip print patterns are able to distinguish individual and may be useful in ethnic determination.
