Abstract

This study entitled “The Role of PT. Alwi Assegaf on the Community Socioeconomic Development in Assegaf village, Tangga Takat village communities, Palembang in 1929-1998.” The objective of the study was to find out the development of PT. Alwi Assegaf in 1929-1998 and to explain the role of PT. Alwi Assegaf factory on the community life in the surrounding environment of PT. Alwi Assegaf. This study used historical method. There are some steps of historical method namely heuristic, source criticism, historiography, social approach, and economic approach. Based on the results, it is found that PT. Alwi Assegaf is the oldest ice block factory in Palembang City. This factory was built in 1928 but began to fully operate in 1929. At the time of Dutch colonial, this factory was named NV. Juliana but because of the government regulations on business licenses this factory was named PT. Alwi Assegaf. This factory was built by Arabs named Habib Alwi Assegaf. Habib Alwi Assegaf was from Hadramaut which is known as Yaman now. PT. Alwi Assegaf produces clean water and ice blocks. This factory continues to develop along with the increasing demand for ice blocks, so PT. Alwi Assegaf built new building in 1932, 1974, and 1991 which is located next to the factory. Before building this ice block business, Habib Alwi used to own a rice mill business, lemonade factory, and wood business which is closed in 1970s. PT. Alwi Assegaf is located on the banks of the Musi River so as to produce ice blocks, this factory carried out water distillation from the Musi River to get clean water. The clean water also channeled around the Assegaf village for the community and provide education in the form Islamic school (Madrasah) in the Assegaf village.
