Abstract

Background: Candida albicans is naturally presented in the oral cavity in a non-pathogenic condition, but it can be pathogenic in a favorable situation that causes candidiasis. Beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) has known having antimicrobial ability. The phytochemical contents contained in beetroot are flavonoid, saponin, and betalain has the ability to inhibit some bacteria. Objective: the objective of this study is to determine the antimicrobial activity of beetroot extract (Beta vulgaris L.) against Candida albicans in vitro. Method: This study used a laboratory experimental method consisting of six test groups (Beetroot extract 1%, 2%, 5%, 10% concentration, nystatin, and aquadest). The suspension of C. albicans was a standard turbidity of 0.5 Mc Farland. The suspension was applied on Sabouraud Dextrose Agar plates and made into wells then dropped for 20µls. The media was incubated at 37⁰C for 24 hours. The inhibition zone is done by measuring the clear zone formed around the well. Results: The largest inhibition zone diameter was 13,502 mm in nystatin as positive control and the smallest inhibition zone value was 0 mm in beetroot extract 1%, 2%, 5%, and 10% concentration, and aquadest as negative control. Conclusion: Beetroot extract (Beta vulgaris L.) does not have antimicrobial activity against Candida albicans in vitro. Keywords: Antimicrobial activity, Beetroot extract, Candida albicans
