Abstract

Background : Defecation pattern is one indicator of health in children. Defecation pattern can be affected by the position at the time of defecation and environment stress, such as in new students. There are two types of toilets that are commonly used by the public. They are sitting toilet and squatting toilet. It is necessary to do research to know the association of the toilet types with the defecation patterns of new students of Xaverius 1 Junior High School in Palembang. Method: The type of this research is observational analytic with case control design that uses data obtained from new students of Xaverius 1 Junior High School in Palembang. The sample consists of 80 people (40 samples with impaired defecation patterns and 40 normal samples) which are taken by consecutive sampling. The data is taken using a questionnaire. Analysis of the direct relationship between the independent and dependent variables is done with bivariate analysis, using the Chi Square test. Result : Most of the students who used the sitting toilet had impaired defecation pattern, which were 24 people (63.15%). Most of the students who used the squatting toilet had normal defecation pattern, which were 26 people (61.90%). There is an association between the toilet types and the defecation patterns of new students of Xaverius 1 Junior High School in Palembang (p=0.044). The students who use the sitting toilet have 2,786 times more likely to experience impaired defecation patterns compared to students who use the squatting toilet (OR=2.786). Conclusion : There is an association between the toilet types with the defecation patterns of new students of Xaverius 1 Junior High School in Palembang (p<0,05).
