Abstract

Backgrounds: Postoperative sore throat is a minor complication that often occurs in surgery with general anesthesia. The prevalence of postoperative sore throat with general anesthesia is reported from 15% to 62%. The cause of sore throat can be caused by patient factors, surgery factors and airway management equipment factors. This can cause trauma to the airway mucosa. This research aims to determine the prevalence of throat pain and risk factors for throat pain in post adult elective surgery patients with general anesthesia at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Central Public Hospital. Method: This research is a quantitative descriptive with cross-sectional design approach to 74 respondents who were undergoing elective surgery under general anesthesia at Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang Central Public Hospital in 14 August-27 August 2019. Result: The prevalence of sore throat is 28.37% and the majority of complains were mild pain with the number of people were 16 (21.6%) and the moderate pain were 5 people (6.8%). The highest frequency distribution was found at the age of 26-35 years (50%), women (36%), ASA II (35.1%), Mallampati I (32.1%), Endotracheal Tube (33,3%), junior residents (30,6%), duration of surgery >3-6 hours (33,3%) and undergoing obgyn surgery (53,8%). Conclusion: The prevalence of post-surgery throat pain in 14 August-27 August 2019 was 28,37%. The majority cases occurred in the age range 26-35 years, dominated by women, more in ASA II and Mallampati I. The majority of complaints in postoperative sore throat in the using of endotracheal tube by junior residents with duration of surgery >3-6 hours and those who were undergoing obgyn surgery
