Abstract

Background: Dysphagia is an impairment of swallowing that caused the difficulty for food bolus to travels down the mouth to the stomach for digestion. Dysphagia-related complications negatively impacts quality of life (QoL) so that the study about quality of life in patients with dysphagia has to be done periodically. This study was conducted in order to understand the quality of life in patients with dysphagia at Medical Staff Group of ENT-HNS RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang. Methods: This study is an observational study of cross-sectional descriptive type. The participants consisted of patients with dysphagia in September-December 2019 at Medical Staff Group of ENT-HNS RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang who meet inclusion criterias. This study used Dysphagia Handicap Index (DHI) to evaluate the quality of life score in patients with dysphagia. Results: Regarding physical subscale, 30% patients had mild handicap, 65% patients had moderate handicap while the other 5% had severe handicap. As for functional subscale, 90% patients had moderate handicap, whereas mild handicap and severe handicap consists of 5% patients each. For emotional subscale, 10% patients had mild handicap, 70% patients had moderate handicap, while 20% patients was normal. Conclusions: The majority of patients at Medical Staff Group of ENT-HNS RSUP Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang in September-December 2019 had moderate handicap regarding physical, functional and emotional subscale.
