Abstract

Research on the dynamics of water levels and the physical properties of soil is one of the important aspects in developing and increasing agricultural land production on lowland, due to its effect of the growth and crops production. This study was aimed to determine the condition of some physical properties of the soil (texture, bulk density, and total pore space) and to find out the dynamics of groundwater in supporting the growth of corn in a tertiary plot (16 ha). This research was carried out on Delta Telang II lowland in Mulia Sari Village P17-5N Banyuasin Regency on tertiary plot 5. The study was conducted from March to August 2017. The results showed that watertable fluctuations affected the growth and production process of corn plants. Based on the analysis of SEW-50, the watertable level which detected on the root zone, average of -17 cm from the ground surface will produce good corn growth and production. In the period May - June 2017 Water level fluctuations in tertiary plot 5 ranged from -4 to -55 cm, in tertiary canal 5 ranged from 48-104 cm and on secondary canal ranged from 37-128 cm. The soil texture was dominated by clay and clay loam. The soil bulk density at a depth of 0-20 cm ranged from 0.72-0.97 g per cm³, with an average value of 0.82 g per cm³. Meanwhile, the total pore space in the 0-20 cm layer ranged from 63,40-75,48%, with an average value of 69,01%. The height of corn plants aged 30 days ranged from 45-65 cm.
