Abstract

ABSTRACT This studi analyze the profit efficiency level of rice farming system in Bengkulu Province. In Bengkulu, the existing productivity of irrigated farm?s has decreased from 4 to 3 tons ha-1; also rain fed farms has decreased from 3 to 2,75 ton ha-1, while the potency of production is 6 to 7 tons ha-1. By this the efficiency to be a way to increase productivity and income. The objective of the paper are : (i) to analyze the profit efficiency level of paddy farming systems; and (ii) to identify the determinants of profit efficiencies. Primary data has been collected across 9 villages in three different irrigation types in Bengkulu. In this study the efficiency and it determinants are measured directly by employing the translog stochastic profit frontier using the computer program Stata ver10.1. These results suggest that mean profit efficiency of rice farming system at Bengkulu is 50,24%. The efficiency differences are explained largely by irrigation infrastructure, education, age, and extension. Hence, the study proposes providing better education and extension services, which develop learning by doing practices of the farmer then improving poor rural infrastructure will improve efficiency. Keywords : profit efficiency, paddy, farming system.
