Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a tropical infectious disease caused by dengue virus and transmitted through mosquitoes, Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus species. The use of synthetic chemicals such as DDT, temephos, and abate is often used as a method of eradicating mosquito larvae but has adverse effects if widely used. Therefore research and development was carried out to determine the effectiveness of larvicides made from extracts and active fractions of cinnamon leaves as a substitute for synthetic larvasides. This research is an experimental study with a complete randomized study design ‘in vitro’ form. The subjects in this study were Aedes aegypti instar larvae III liverpol strains obtained from the Aedes aegypti egg rearing process at the Balai Bangkes Baturaja Entomology Laboratory. The effectiveness of extracts and active fractions of cinnamon leaves (Cinnamomum burmannii) was tested on Aedes aegypti larvae to determine the most effective substances as Aedes aegypti larvaside. Thereafter the active substances were tested again with 5 treatment concentrations namely 0.065%, 0.125%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1% and distilled water (as a negative control). Ethanol extract and all active fractions of cinnamon leaf (Cinnamomum burmannii) have larvicidal activity. Ethanol extract at 0,5% concentration resulted 100% mortality of larvae with 24 hours of examination period after the effectiveness test was started. Ethanol extract of cinnamon leaves (Cinnamomum burmannii) has effectiveness as Aedes aegypti larvicide with LC50 value at a concentration of 0.153% (0.132% - 0.172%).
