Abstract

This paper aims at describing how the Internet-Based Directed Reading (IBDR) project could be implemented in English Language Teaching (ELT) to help students improve their English mastery. Ibdr refers to an extensive reading assignment given to students individually within a limited time after their formal reading class. There are at least three major uses of IBDR: to increase students'vocabulary stock, to broaden their knowledge of the reading subject matter, and to improve their productive English language skill. The Implication of IBDR is that the students are required to present a summary of their individual work either in writing or in speaking. The response of the students toward IBDR was positive. The result of the questioners showed that 85% of the respodents supported the beneficial view of IBDR, and 80% did not support the negative statements of IBDR. This reflects the consistency of the respondents' support for IBDR.
