Abstract

This article is based on qualitative research (the study of documents, interviews, focus group discussions, and observations) in Palembang city community, especially women. Most informants acknowledge that the negative impact of plastic bag litter is much more than positive impact, only the main option to keep using plastic bags. Nevertheless, the solution reduces waste plastic bags can be used cardboard boxes, shopping bags (goodie bags) or carrying goods without wrapped. However, also fund people familiar with Indonesian local wisdom in reducing waste plastic bags, namely Boenthelan. This article presents the potential of indigenous people of Indonesia in reducing plastic bag litter. During most of this community is dependent on plastic bags for carrying and packing of goods. Plastic bags become the first choice because it is modern, varied models and colors, as well as practical. Meanwhile, the cultural heritage in the natural preserve increasingly marginalized. Only very limited people who know and use local knowledge of this because of the limitations of knowledge, ancient assumption, less practical, is also less confident. In this case, the role of women known to remain a major element for the preservation of culture and environment. These findings are useful for policy-makers and stakeholders to emphasize the social structure, cultural, and social processes in managing and pass national culture related to environmental ethics.
