Abstract

One way to reduce exhaust emissions in motor vehicles is to install a catalytic converter (exhaust converter) on the exhaust. The addition of catalytic converter is proven to reduce exhaust emissions while increasing vehicle engine performance. In this study, the influence of the number of catalyst plates with catalyst material, namely brass (CuZn), on the performance of Yamaha Jupiter MX motorcycle engines in assembly in 2007. The catalyst is arranged in the motorcycle exhaust, with variations in the number of catalyst plates, namely 5 plates and 8 plates. So that there are three types of mufflers tested their effect on engine performance. Engine performance parameters to be taken into account, namely torque, power, specific fuel usage, and thermal efficiency. Testing torque and power using a prony brake dynamometer. The results of the study show that the exhaust with a number of 8 catalyst plates can increase engine performance greater than the exhaust with a number of 5 catalyst plates. Muffler with 8 catalyst plates can increase engine efficiency by an average of 17.65%. So, increasing the number of catalyst plates can increase engine efficiency.
