Abstract

In the metal cutting process, friction between the workpiece and the tool will cause heat, so the tool temperature especially the active plane of the tool will be very high. This will cause tool wear to occur so that product quality will decrease. In the metal machining process, tool wear is affected by friction between the tool eye and workpiece. This tool wear will be greater to a certain extent, so that the tool can not be used anymore. This study aims to analyze the growth of tool wear in the side milling process and the influence of parameters on tool wear and the influence of tool wear on surface roughness. The tool used is the 10 mm diameter EndMill HSS 4 flute, low carbon steel workpiece, and using coconut oil as cutting fluid. The study was conducted using three machining parameters namely cutting speed (Vc), feed motion per tooth (fz), depth of feeding (ax). From the analysis results of tool wear measurements, the effect of cutting speed (Vc), feed motion per tooth (fz), feeding depth (ax) to tool wear have increased with an average percentage of cutting speed variation of 0.412%, variations in feed motion per tooth by 0.66%, and the variation in depth of eating by 1,296%. Whereas the value of surface roughness produced at the cutting speed variation gets a decrease in the roughness percentage of 9.2%, the variation of feed motion per tooth has increased by 8.125%, and the variation in the depth of feeding has increased by 14.4%. From the results of these measurements it can be concluded that the tool wear is very influential on the surface roughness of the workpiece.
