Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to determine the effect of the solution in the quenching process on steel assab and find out which quenching solution media produces the highest level of hardness. Using 760 steel materials included in medium carbon steel (BKM). With combustion temperatures reaching austenite temperatures or in the range of 845⁰C - 870⁰C using quenching media solutions for coconut water, oil, mineral water, and charcoal water. Which this research was conducted in July 2019 using a Rockwell hardness testing machine with its unit Hardness Rockwell Cone (HRC), after hardening the hardening process. The results of testing the average hardness value of steel 760 assab with media without quenching of 50.2 HRC, for media quenching solution for coconut water by 51.2 HRC, media oil quenching solution for 52.4 HRC, media for quenching mineral water by 55,2 HRC, while the charcoal water quenching solution media was 59.2 HRC. This shows that there are differences in the value of hardness in steel assab 760 between before and after undergoing a hardening process which is then cooled with a solution of coconut water, oil, mineral water, and charcoal water. So it can be concluded that each solution affects the hardness level of steel assab 760. The highest level of steel hardness is achieved in the charcoal water quenching solution media.
