Abstract

This research was conducted at off-campus research facility at Jakabaring (104o46’44‖ E; 3o01’35‖ S), Palembang, from October to November 2017. Objective of this research was to determine morphological responses of velvetleaf plant to partial submersion during vegetative growth stage. Four blocks and five duration of submerging treatments were laid out according to Randomized Block Design. Each experimental unit consisted of 3 plants. The treatments were 0, 3, 6, 9, and 12 days of submersion, denoted as P0, P1, P2, P3, and P4, respectively. P0 as the untreated control. Results of this research revealed that submerging treatments up to 9 days (P1 to P3) did not significantly affect growth of the velvetleaf plant as indicated by some measured morphological traits. However, longer duration of submersion (P4) negatively affect growth of the velvetleaf plant, including increase in number of broken leaf petioles during recovery period. The broken leaf petioles were occurred on elongated petioles developed during submerging treatment. Number of elongated petioles was associated with duration of submersion. Leaves developed during recovery period exhibited normal petiole length. Fresh and dry weights of shoot and root were lower for velvetleaf plants exposed to longer duration of submersion
