Abstract

The use of plastics continues to increase every year because of some of the superior properties possessed by plastics including flexible, easily shaped, heat-resistant, lightweight and inexpensive. The increasing use of plastic bottles has not been matched by efficient plastic waste treatment, thus causing a pile of plastic bottle waste in the environment. One way to overcome environmental pollution due to piles of plastic bottles is to do recycling. But recycling is still constrained by the process of sorting plastics. Automation of recycling processing needs to be done to reduce the possibility of human error. In this study the Edge Detection method was chosen to develop a plastic identification and classification system automatically using MATLAB software which is connected to the webcam as a sensor to facilitate the sorting process in the processing of plastic waste recycling. A total of 738 plastic images will be obtained by the edge detection value and then made in a database to be identified and classified. Types of plastic bottles used as research objects, namely PET, HDPE and PP. Based on the development of an automatic identification and classification system for plastic bottles, where the research database has passed the testing process, the percentage of success obtained from the Sobel method identification and classification system is 43.76693% and the success percentage from the Canny method is 37.9403%.
