Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder caused by the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or the body can not use insulin produced effectively. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus in Indonesia based on a blood test in the population ≥ 15 years increased from 2013 to 6.9% to 10.9% in 2018 and the proportion of DM based on gender is more common in women. This research is to analyze the effect of central obesity with insidence diabetes mellitus in men and women in Indonesia. This research is a quantitative study using a cross sectional design. The data used are secondary data obtained from Indonesian Family Life Survey 5 (IFLS 5). This study used all subjects who met the inclusion criteria as many as 5558 male respondents and 5516 female respondents. Data is analyzed by Complex Sample in univariate, bivariate and multivariate. The results of bivariate analysis showed that in men there was a relationship between central obesity, education level, employment status, place of residence, physical activity, and hypertension with the incidence of diabetes mellitus. Whereas in women, the results of bivariate analysis showed that there was a relationship between central obesity, education level, work status, place of residence, physical activity, and hypertension with the incidence of diabetes mellitus. In men, central obesity has an effect on the incidence of diabetes mellitus after being controlled by variables of level of education, employment status, place of residence, and hypertension (p-value = 0,001; PR = 1,79; 95% CI = 1,45-2,21). Whereas in women, central obesity has an effect on diabetes mellitus after being controlled variables of education level, work status, place of residence, physical activity, and hypertension (p-value = 0,001; PR = 2,11; 95% CI = 1,69-2,67). The need for DM prevention measures such as controlling and regularly checking blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol, as well as regular physical activity.
