Abstract

Kenikir is one of the plants that has cytotoxic, antioxidant and antidiabetic properties. Chemical content contained in kenikir leaves in the form of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenolics, and steroids. In this study, acute toxicity of kenikir leaves (Cosmos caudatus H.B.K.) ethanol extract was conducted on male white rats of wistar strain with fixed dose procedure method. The extraction method used was maceration using 70% ethanol. Based on the preliminary test, a dose of 2000 mg/kgBB was determined as the initial dose used in the main test. Test animals used in the main test were divided the normal and the 2000 mg/kgBB dose group. Each used 5 test animals in each group. The results of the test showed that there were no deaths or toxic symptoms in the test animals of the normal group and the 2000 mg/kgBB dose group. The range of toxic doses of kenikir leaves ethanol extract that can cause acute toxicity is >2000 mg/kgBB so classified in the practically non-toxic category. The results of the statistical analysis showed that there was no significant effect (p>0.05) from kenikir leaves ethanol extract on macroscopic organs of liver, kidney, and heart of test animals. The results of the average levels of biochemical parameters of the normal group and the 2000 mg / kgBB dose group were in the normal range. The average levels of biochemical parameters of the normal group were SGOT 65.020 ± 12.207 U/L, SGPT 67.094 ± 3.737 U/L, creatinine 0.706 ± 0.336 mg/dL, and ureum 14.160 ± 0.684 mg/dL. While the average biochemical parameter levels of the 2000 mg/kgBB dose group were SGOT 71,216 ± 9,649 U/L, SGPT 85,218 ± 8.314 U/L, creatinine 0.958 ± 0.167 mg/dL, and urea 18,760 ± 2.744 mg/dL.
