Abstract

Industry of the large and small machinery which are developing rapidly will not be separated from the use of machinery tools. Lathe is such type of machinery tools used by the large and small machinery industries. The type of machinery on lathe is generally carried out by two methods namely turning with coolant and turning with dryer. Hot machining method used in this research is to improve the quality of metal turning process. Hot machining is one of the alternatives used in the process of turning metal on materials that are difficult to cut such as superalloys, titanium alloys and ceramics. The metal turning process is very susceptible by friction which results in overheating of the chisel eye and workpiece. If the overheat is on the chisel eye, it can shorten the life of the tool. Meanwhile, if the overheat is found in the workpiece, it can result in surface roughness on the workpiece. Surface roughness of the workpiece is one of the important parameters of the process in machinery. This research is about the development of mathematical modeling in predicting the roughness of machinery surface of AISI 4340 lathe by carbide tools using hot machining method. To get linear surface roughness modeling, response surface methodology had been used in research. The purpose of this research is to observe the effect of cutting speed, depth of cut, feed rate, and workpiece temperature on the surface roughness of AISI 4340. In conducting research, central composite design had been used as an experimental design. By then, there were as many as 30 experiments obtained for 4 independent variables in this research. The results of this research would be analyzed statistically using Design Expert 12 software. Based on the linear surface roughness modeling, feed rate was the biggest factor affecting the surface roughness of the workpiece, followed by depth of cut, cutting speed and last by the temperature of the workpiece. The average error in this research was 20.732% and the mean square error (MSE) was 0.052284. these are indicated that the surface roughness modeling of AISI 4340 lathe by the hot machining method is accepted.
