Abstract

Productivity and quality of products are major concern of indutries aspects. However present paper focused in the investigation of cutting tool temperature. cutting tool temperature is an important factor governing the mechanism of tool wear in the turning process, due to the critical nature of the cutting tool such as hardness, toughness decreases with increasing cutting temperature. The present work evaluates effect of input parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut, and heating temperature and output parameter cutting tool temperature on hot machining AISI 4340 steel material and evaluates the effect of cutting tool temperature on flank wear of the tool itself. Temperature was measured using the Arduino software. The heating technique used is local heating technique with the help of torch. The experimental design is planned by using central composite design, and the results are modeled by Artificial Neural Network. Results illustrate that among the four process parameters depth of cut and heating temperature has the most influence on cutting tool temperature and flank wear of the cutting tool itself. The predicted cutting tool temperature values from ANN model are closely near to the experimental results and it is observed that the error lie in the range of 0,1 to 0,7%, which validate the current ANN model.
