Abstract

Background. Frozen section examination is a rapid histological analysis conducted toward ovarian mass during surgery, although with lower quality compared with routine pathological examination as golden standard. This research was conducted to evaluate the accuracy of frozen section examination compared to routine pathological examination as ovarian tumors diagnosis modality in Anatomical Pathology Department, RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang during January 2014-August 2017. Methods. This is a diagnostic test research to compare the accuracy of ovarian frozen section examination. The population in this research is all the results of ovarian tumors histopathological examination result at Anatomical Pathology Department, RSUP dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang on January 2014-August 2017. The study included 295 patients that was conducted with consecutive sampling, then sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy will be counted. Result. The overall accuracy of frozen section in determining malignancy of ovarian tumors was 90%. Twenty nine cases were incorrectly diagnosed, with 17 cases were under-diagnosed and 12 cases were over-diagnosed. Malignant tumors sensitivity was highest (91%) with specificity 94%, for benign tumors the sensitivity was 90% and the spesificity was 95%, whereas in borderline tumors sensitivity was lowest (78%) with spesificity 97%. Accuracy of frozen section for ovarian tumors mucinous type was 87% whereas for non-mucinous type was 91%. Conclusion. The study showed that frozen section is an accurate test for determining malignancy, whereas the sensitivity to determining borderline tumors was lower than beningn and malignant tumors.
