Abstract

Design and Technical Testing of Portable Downdraft Gasifier Using Fuel of Gelam Wood Bark Briquettes (Melaleuca leucadendron Linn.). The research objective was to design and to test portable downdraft gasifier using briquette of gelam wood bark. The study was conducted from September 2017 to Februari 2018 at the workshop of Balai Latihan Kerja, Kenten Sako, Palembang, South Sumatra. The method used in this research was engineering design of portable downdraft gasifier using three replications. The observed parameters were consisted of combustion operation time, fuel consumption rate, specific gasification rate, combustion efficiency and ash content. The data are presented in form of graphs and tables. The results showed that briquette fuel size (volume), water content and density had effect on parameters of combustion operation time, fuel consumption rate and specific gasification rate. The highest values of combustion operation time, fuel consumption rate and specific gasification rate were found on first replication with magnitude of 7.54 hours; 0.33 kg/h and 4.69 kg/m2.h respectively. The third replication was the most efficient in term of combustion efficiency and ash content with magnitude of 1.85% and 5.53%, respectively. It is recommended to conduct further research in order to determine the better dimension of reactor tube height to prevent longer combustion time for briquette on 5 cm lower part of reactor tube as well as blower size.
