Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the best depth of dripline placement based on the wetting pattern especially horizontal distance from emitter in the rooting area for shallow rooted vegetable in subsurface drip irrigation systems. The research used experimental method, and the results were presented in form of graphs and tables. The parameters observed included the average horizontal wetting distance on the right and left of the dripline, the vertical wetting distance above and below of the dripline, and the ratio of the horizontal and vertical wetting distances below and above the dripline. Ultisol wetting by water distribution from the emitters above and below the dripline in all three treatments can be approximated by regression of the polynomial quadratic pattern. The wetting curve above the dripline is hyperbolic, while under the dripline it is parabolic. Placement of dripline 20 cm below ground level is best based on the wetting distance with a wider horizontal direction, vertical wetting on the dripline that does not result in high evaporation, and the ratio of H/Va and H/Vb is greater than one. In the dripline treatment which is placed 20 cm below the ground surface, the relationship between duration of irrigation and horizontal wetting distance (h, cm) and time (t, minute) above dripline can be state by equation h (t) = 0,263t + 2,4, while it vertical wetting distance can be state by equation v (t) = 0,199 t + 2,245. Then for below dripline the relationship between deration of irrigation (t) and horizontal wetting distance (h) can be stated by equation h (t) = 0,277t + 1,809, while it vertical wetting distance can be stated by equation v (t) = 0,221t + 1,944.
