Abstract

Background: Infectious disease is one of the major health problems in the world, even in Indonesia. One of the causes is Mycobacterium infection. Infection from Mycobacterium nontuberculosis is often diagnosed as TB resulting in an increase in MDR TB cases. Errors in diagnosis are caused by a low sensitivity checking method such as Ziehl-neelsen staining. The purpose of this study was to identify Mycobacterium nontuberculosis from sputum specimens with positive smear results. Methods: This research is an observational descriptive study with a laboratory design study to identify Mycobacterium nontuberculosis. In this study, 20 samples of positive smear result collected from pulmonary tuberculosis suspected patients examined in Microbiology Clinical Laboratory of dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang by using multiplex PCR technique. The presence of Mycobacterium nontuberculosis was confirmed by examination of the hsp65 gene. Results: The results of this study were 26% of the samples identified as Mycobacterium nontuberculosis and 74% were Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Conclusion: In this study 26% of Mycobacterium nontuberculosis species have been found from sputum specimens with positive smear results.
