Abstract

In an effort to produce the high quality rice that is protected from pests, diseases and weeds in rice plants quickly, causing many farmers to use chemicals such as pesticides to control it. Therefore, farmers are often directly exposed to pesticides because of spraying. The most pestcides widely used are glycine group pesticides with glyphosate isoprophyl amine active ingredient. The aim of this study was to analyze the factors associated with subjective health complaints of farmers spraying pesticides on rice plants. This research was conducted by quantitative analytical method using a cross sectional study design, with a total sample of 126 farmers spraying pesticides on rice plants. Sampling was done by purposive sampling technique that paid attention to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The data was obtained from interviewing by using questionnaires and observations. The results showed that there was a significant relationship between age (p=0,038), work period (p=0,046), the length of spraying (p=0,035), the time of spraying (p=0,038), and number of pesticide types (p=0,034) with subjective health complaints. The conclusion, the risk factors in this study were age, length of spraying, time of spraying, and number of types of pesticides. Where as the protective factor was the period of work. To avoid subjective health complaints, it was recommended that farmers use complete personal protective equipment when spraying and replacing an appliance used by hand with an electrical spraying that can reduce the tremor complaint to farmers.
