Abstract

Aluminium 6061 is an aluminium alloy with Mg2Si that can undergo increased hardness after the heat treatment. This study was conducted to see the influence of increased hardness after heat treatment with 1 hour, 3 hours, and 5 hours aging reaction kinetics of aluminium powder oxidation 6061 at high temperatures. Investigation carried out using TG/DTA Exstar SII 7300, constant heating rate (Ramp) 10oC/min to reach 900oC temperature by using atmospheric oxygen gas (O2). Known from the research of oxidation aluminium powder at high temperature occurs through several phases, namely the growth phase of amorphous coating, the transition phase of the amorphous layer into Ƴ-alumina, Ƴ-alumina growth phase, Ƴ-alumina transition phase (θ-alumina and δ-alumina) before finally becoming a more stable oxide layer (α-alumina). In the 1-3 phase requires a fairly low activation energy compared to the required activation energy in phase 4, which is the Ƴ-alumina transition phase to θ-alumina. The QA5 sample experienced a decrease in mass after touching its melting point, it was possible due to a crack in the alumina lining so that it eventually broke and caused liquid aluminum to spray out.
