Abstract

The research aims to obtain the bulk density of ultisol soils that provide the best wetting pattern at horizontal and vertical distances in shallow rooted plant roots using subsurface drip irrigation. This research was carried out in November 2019 to January 2020 in the Soil and Water Engineering Laboratory and Plant Houses, Department of Agricultural Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University. The study used ultisol soil which was placed in an acryllic box that was irrigated for 30 minutes, under conditions of average daily air temperature is 29,11oC, and without being directly affected by solar radiation. This research was conducted by using an experimental method which consisting of three treatments of soil density (0.8 g/cm3, 0.9 g/cm3, and 1.0 g/cm3), and each treatment was repeated twice. The results showed that the wetting pattern could be approached by polynomial regression. All treatments showed an H/Va ratio and an H/Vb ratio > 1. The treatment of soil density 0.8 g/cm3 produces the best wetting pattern based on the largest of wetting distance 22,57 cm in horizontal and 14,70 cm in vertical from the emitter above the dripline. The relationship between horizontal and vertical distances for the treatment of 0.8 g/cm3 can be approached by polynomial regression, namely: H(va) = 0.0244 va 2 + 5.10-6 va + 13.03 with R2 = 0,9566 using the veritcal distance above the dripline, and H(vb) = 0.0428 vb2 + 6.10-6 vb - 13.598 with R2 = 0,9649 when using the vertical wetting distance below the dripline.
