Abstract

Filter as one of method to maintain the water quality of fish ponds mainly in water recirculation system. The purpose of this research is to determine the effectiveness of cockle shells (Anadara granosa) in maintaining the quality of water in the recirculation system using the of cockle shells as a filter and its effect on the survival and growth of catfish (Pangasius sp.). This research used factorial completely randomized design (RALF) using two factors that are particle size of cockle shells (A) and filter thickness (B). The particle size of cockle shells consists of particle size 0.5 mm, 1.5 and 2.5 mm for A1, A2 and A3, respectively. Meanwhile the filter thicknes consists of 5 cm (B1), 10 cm (B2) and 15 cm (B3). Each treatments provides two replications. The result showed that water quality of all treatments were still in the optimal range for culture of catfish with the temperature was 27.45-31.500C, pH 7.04-8.26, DO 5.10-7.18 mg.L-1, alkalinity 49–99.94 mg, ammonia 0.03-0.25 mg.L-1 and calcium 29.23-59.70 mg.L-1. Based on analysis, at day-30, A2B3 and A3B1 has the lowest value of ammonia. The treatments has no significant effect on fish growth and survival rate. The absolute growth of fish on A2B3 and A3B1 were 4.45 and 4.46 g for weight and 3.86 and 3.82 cm for length, and the survival rate of fish were 96 and 98 %.
