Abstract
Fe3Al, FeAl3 and Fe2Al5 alloys for hydrogen storage were successfully synthesized using Mechanical Alloying method with a combination of Fe and Al metals. Alloy Fe/Al made in the composition of Al by 13.87% w/w; 59.18% w/w and 54.71% w/w in a milling time for 5 and 15 hours. Alloys were characterized using XRD and their adsorption desorption performance were tested. Alloys with the largest adsorption and desorption capacities were characterized using SEM-EDX. The XRD characterization for Fe3Al alloys shows typical peaks at 44,798 (5 hours milling), 47.9 and 60.26 (15 hours milling). Alloy Fe2Al5 shows typical peaks at 44, 65 and 78 (5 hour milling), 44 and 64 (15 hour milling). Meanwhile, FeAl3 alloy has typical peaks at 38, 44 and 64 (5 hour milling), 38 and 44 (15 hour milling). The alloy which was successfully synthesized and according to JCPDS with a large crystallinity size was applied as a hydrogen storage material in the form of metal hydride. The results showed that the capacity of hydrogen adsorption increases with increasing pressure, but the adsorption capacity decreases with increasing temperature. Alloy with the highest adsorption and desorption capacities were produced from Fe3Al alloy with adsorption capacity of 31.82% w/w at 3 bar pressure and 30C temperature. Meanwhile, its desorption capacity is 31.65% w/w at a temperature of 30C. SEM-EDX characterization was carried out on Fe3Al alloys which were milled for 5 hours and produced granules sizes and different compositions between before and after hydrogen adsorption. The granular size of the alloy before adsorption is smaller than the alloy after adsorption. Meanwhile, the composition in the alloy before adsorption is less than in the alloy after adsorption. Thermodynamic analysis of hydrogen adsorption at temperature variations for each alloy occur spontaneously because Gibbs free energy is negative and H is smaller than TS. Enthalpy (H) and entropy (S) adsorption are positive which indicates that the adsorption occur endothermic and increases the chance of the adsorption reaction occur spontaneously. The results showed the lowest Gibbs free energy at 323 K with a value of -0.3301 kJ/mol for Fe3Al alloys. Values of G < 0 and H > 0 indicate that the reaction is spontaneous and endothermic.
