Abstract

Welding using Commercially Pure Titanium material has been widely applied to components that require materials that are strong and resistant to corrosion such as the reactor components at PT. Sriwidjaja Fertilizer. In connection with titanium, there are often problems when the welding process is incorrect, such as crack, and the life of the connection does not expire, failure may be caused by improper titanium welding. Titanium material at temperatures above 500 ° C is very easy to be contaminated by external elements such as oxygen, hydrogen, and nitrogen, so it requires extra attention from the welder for welding. This study seeks to analyze the effect of different argon shielding gas flow discharges on TIG welding to changes in mechanical properties and microstructure shape of titanium connections in base metal, HAZ, and weld metal regions. The analysis is carried out with a series of tests which include XRF testing, hardness testing, tensile testing, fractographic testing, metallographic testing, and XRD testing. In the tensile and hardness testing indicated welding of 3 titanium welding samples with different argon discharge samples A (15 L/min), sample B (25 L/min), and sample C (60 L/min) showed the results of significant changes. on the increase in hardness and tensile strength of material joints, sample C shows the best results with the addition of non-high hardness values, and good tensile strength values. The value of hardness rises in the fusion zone area, this is directly proportional to the micro structure structure where in the fusion zone area the formation of platelets and acicular alpha is formed. Observations made with an optical microscope show changes in grain from titanium from the base metal region which initially formed hexagonal close packed (α phase) to serrated, acicular, and platelet alpha. The results of the study indicate the magnitude of the effect of the difference in argon gas discharge on titanium protection during welding with the TIG method..
