Abstract

Stunting is a result of malnutrition that accumulates for an extended time and is a threat to the future of Indonesian children. The incidence of toddler’s stunting is indirectly related to the role of positive parenting in the family, which includes feeding, nurturing, hygiene, and accessing health services. The study aims to analyze the correlation of cultural factors in parenting using a positive deviance approach with the incidence of stunting in children in Palembang. The study was conducted in March 2019 using a mixed methodology approach and a cross sectional design. Data samples of 100 mothers with children aged 24–59 months from poor families in Palembang were chosen by proportional random sampling and combined with informant research to as many as 6 (six) mothers chosen by purposive sampling. The data analysis used a sequential explanatory method, which began with quantitative data analysis with chi-square and logistic regression, followed by qualitative data analysis through content analysis techniques. The results showed that the proportion of toddler’s stunting in poor families in Palembang was 29%. There was a relationship between feeding habits (p = 0,000), parenting habits (p = 0.001), hygiene habits (p = 0.021), and the habit of accessing health services (p = 0,000) to the incidence of stunting for toddlers. The dominant variable influencing the incidence of stunting in toddlers is the habit of accessing health services (OR = 4.898; CI95% 1.321–18.162). Mothers with poor habits of accessing health services for their children had a 4.898 times higher tendency of having toddlers with stunted growth than those with good habits, after controlling for other variables. Stunting toddlers incidence does not absolutely occur in poor families with the role of positive deviance parenting that reduces stunting incidence. The positive deviance approach can be used as a preventive and promotive efforts to change family habits in improving nutritional status by recognizing the positive habits of toddler’s mother and spread these habits to other family.
