Abstract

This study was aimed to describe the use of diction, imagery, and figurative languages in Okky Madasari’s Pasung Jiwa novel as well as its implications in Indonesian language and literature teaching. Descriptive qualitative method was used for this study. The data were sourced from Pasung Jiwa novel written by Okky Madasari, published by PT Gramedia Pustaka Utama in 2013 with 328 pages. Content analysis was used to analyze the data. The results of the study showed that there were 119 diction, 85 imagery, and 88 figurative languages found in Okky Madasari’s Pasung Jiwa novel with the descriptions as follows; one hundred and nineteen diction accumulated were consisted of (1) connotative words, (2) concrete words, (3) Indonesian honorofics, (4) vulgar words, (5) words with natural reality objects, and (6) words from regional/foreign language. Eighty five imagery accumulated were consisted of (1) visual imagery, (2) auditory imagery, (3) motion imagery, (4) palpable imagery, and (5) olfactory imagery. Eighty eight figurative languages accumulated were consisted of, (1) simile, (2) metaphor, (3) personification, (4) hyperbole, (5) paradox, (6) litotes, (7) irony and sarcasm, (8) metonymy, and (9) synecdoche. The most common diction found was the words from regional/foreign language and the least was words with natural reality objects. On the other hand, the most common imagery found was motion imagery and the least was olfactory imagery. Furthermore, the most common figurative languages found was metaphor and the least was metonymy. Keywords: diction, imagery, figurative language, stylistics
