Abstract

Exposure to sunlight can cause pigmentation in the skin because it increases the work of the tyrosinase enzyme in synthesizing melanin. Jackfruit leaves (Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam.) contain flavonoid compounds which directly inhibit tyrosinase activity in the process of melanogenesis. Gel preparations were made using submicro particles of jackfruit leaves ethanol extract with components in the form of 111 mg jackfruit leaves ethanol extract, chitosan 12 mg, sodium alginate 3.2 mg, and calcium chloride 40 μL with sonication time for 60 minutes. Making a gel using the active ingredient is done to increase absorption so that the effect is faster and maximum. This study aims to determine the characterization of extracts, evaluation of gels and submicro gel formulas of the best jackfruit leaf ethanol extract particles with the variation of HPMC 60-SH concentration of 1%, 2,5% and 5% on the skin discoloration of mice. The change in color on the skin of mice is measured using the L*a*b* chromameter by observing the L* value describing black to white (values 0 to 100). Characterization test results showed that the ethanol extract of jackfruit leaves met the standardization requirements. The increased concentration of HPMC 60-SH take effect to decline power spread and power wash of gel as well enchancement on power sticky, pH and viscosity. The results showed the best formula in this study was in the treatment group II (F2) HPMC 60-SH concentration of 2,5% with the value of test power sticky, power spread, power wash, pH, viscosity, homogeneity and stability respectively 5,307 ± 0,06658 seconds; 3,608 ± 0,06093 cm; 13,63 ± 0,23094 mL; 4,68 ± 0,0208; 3949,345 ± 27,1139 cP; homogeneous and stable. The results of the in-vivo skin lightening statistical test showed that there was no significant difference between the positive treatment group with treatment group I and treatment group II (p> 0,05).
