Abstract

Currently, the majority of lecture activities still use inefficient manual attendance system that causes students to become unfocused while studying. Some research utilizing RFID Reader (Sagala dkk., 2014), Finger Print (Verdian, 2015), and QR Code Reader (Ermatita dkk., 2017) have been conducted to solve the attendance system problem. One of the technologies that also can be used to develop an efficient attendance system is Global Positioning System (GPS). Therefore, the attendance system using GPS technology based on the Internet Of Things (IOT) has been designed. The GPS-based attendance system was divided into two main parts. The first part utilized electronics with a GPS sensor to determine the location where attendance will be conducted while the second part utilized an android application as an interface media. In this study, the process of sending data during the attendance utilized GPRS internet network in electronic system and the 4G internet network on smartphones. Based on the research, students have successfully utilized the GPS-based attendance system with a maximum distance of 3 meters from the electronics connection. The average time required to performed the attendace process was 1 second. The speed of this process was affected by the stability of the internet network of the smartphone. Keyword: Attendance system, Global Positioning System (GPS), Internet of Things, Applications.
