Abstract

Insects have many types, there are types of insects that have the potential and act as pests and there are also those that have benefits for human life. One insect that has benefits for human is the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens). Maggot of H. illucens has the potential to be used as an organic waste decomposing agent. Besides having the ability to process organic waste, it also has potential as food for livestock, because it contains high protein. This research was conducted in December 2019 until February 2020. Maggot of H. illucens as many as 40 animals obtained from culturing proccess were included in each treatment media and maggot morphology was observed from the age of 1 day to 15 days and during maintenance observed physical factors such as ambient temperature, media water content, room humidity and meida pH at the beginning and end of research. After day -15, maggot is taken to be analyzed for its protein content by the Kjedahl method. Media with composition 60% Fruits: 40% Vegetables, 50% Fruits: 50% Vegetables and 75% Fruits: 25% Vegetables cause maggot to have the highest protein content percentage and the results of the morphological observations of maggot on day -15 are on instar 5. Composition with more dominant fruit percentage is assumed to have more influence on the maggot protein content than the composition of the fruit media only or only vegetables or vegetables are more dominant.
