Abstract

Research has been carried out on the processing of rubber industry wastewater using Saccharomyces cerevisiae biofilter. This study aims to determine the effect of sugarcane bagasse carbon adsorbent and the optimum incubated time required in the biofiltration processed in an anaerobic biofilter to decrease the value of total solid suspended (TSS), ammonia, N-total, biological oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The wastewater treatment process was carried out by the biofiltration method with the influence of the adsorbent and the biofiltration method without the influence of the adsorbent. The biofiltration method with the influence of adsorbent used bagasse carbon as an adsorbent. The adsorbent was placed in the reactor, then the wastewater sample passed through the adsorbent. The biofiltration method used biofilms formed by S.cerevisiae on honeycomb PVC media which were placed in a wastewater treatment reactor. The wastewater sample was put into the reactor and left with incubated time of 12, 18, and 24 hours. Adsorption method on biofiltration with the influence of adsorbent produced TSS value of 4.125 mg/L, ammonia 4.845 mg/L, N-total 83.920 mg/L, BOD 5.467 mg/L, and COD 35.791 mg/L and biofiltration method with the effect of adsorbent produced the lowest value at 12 hours of incubated time for N-total 47.600 mg/L and COD 93.640 mg/L, after 24 hours TSS reached 45.500 mg/L, BOD reached 61.800 mg/L, and ammonia 3.900 mg/L. Biofiltration method without the influence of adsorbent produced the lowest value after 12 hours of incubated COD 199.644 mg/L, after 18 hours ammonia reached 32.638 mg/L after 24 hours produces TSS 83.500 mg/L, N-total 245.360 mg/L, and BOD 63.530 mg/L. The results of this study indicate that the adsorption method was more effective for rubber wastewater characteristics than the biofiltration method.
