Abstract

Sriwijaya University is one of the universities located in South Sumatera. There is one building that recently built in Indralaya campus of Sriwijaya University, namely Hall and Student Center Faculty of Economics Sriwijaya University which is built near the density of student activities and buildings. Thus, it needs an external Lightning Protection System (LPS) to minimize the impact of direct lightning strike that can be occurred. A research about the building's external LPS evaluation has been done using Alternative Transient Program (ATP) software to see the potential that arise on the down conductor when lightning directly strikes the air termination. Based on the layout data of the building, it is known that the type of down conductor that will be installed on the external LPS is Bare Core Cable (KBC) 50 mm2 with one down conductor and one earthing rod. Based on the simulation that has been done, it is known that the potential that arised on the down conductor using KBC 50 mm2 is 4.4408 x 106 V. Meanwhile, the potential that arise on the down conductor using KBC 70 mm2 is 4.4406 x 106 V. With one down conductor and one earthing rod that installed on the external LPS, the potential that arise on Rod 1 is 4.441 x 106 V. Meanwhile, the potential that arise on each Rod (Rod 1 and Rod 2) of the external LPS that installed with two down conductors and two earthing rods is 2.7249 x 106 V. Based on the calculation that has been done, the induced voltage that arise in one loop in a room that located next to the down conductor is 378 kV if the peak value of lightning current that strikes the down conductor is 30 kA/microsecond. Meanwhile, based on the simulation that has been done by using ATP softwarE, the induced voltage that arise is 4441.5 kV.
