Abstract

Purple sweet potato leaves (Ipomoea batatas L.) is a medicinal plant used as traditional medicine. Purple sweet potato leaves contain secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, saponins, tannins and terpenoids which are thought to be efficacious as antihyperuricemia. The purpose of this research was to determine the ability of the ethanol extract of purple sweet potato leaves as a antihyperuricemia in white male wistar rats induced chicken liver juice and potassium oxonate. Rats were divided into 5 groups, positive control group (allopurinol 4mg/200gBW), negative control group (NaCMC 0,5%), and treatment group of ethanol extract purple sweet potato leaves doses 300, 600, and 900mg/kgBW. All groups were made to experience hyperuricemia by inducing potassium oxonate with dose 5mg/200gBW intra-peritoneally and chicken liver juice orally. Uric acid levels were measure using the enzymatic method with uric acid reagents (DBHS). The result showed that purple sweet potato leaves extract (Ipomoea batatas L.) at a dose of 600, 900mg/kgBW given was proven to reduce uric acid levels. Based on the post hoc analysis showed not significantly different between the dose of 600, 900mg/kgBW and the positive control group (p>0,05) which showed ethanol extract purple sweet potato leaves contained activity as a antihyperuricemia. Based on the relationship of percent decrease in blood uric acid levels to the dose of the extract, the effective dose value of 50 (ED50) purple sweet potato leaves ethanol extract was 634,05mg/kgBW. The total flavonoid in ethanol extract of young purple sweet potato leaves is 150,24mgQE/g and ethanol extract of old purple sweet potato leaves is 234,73mgQE/g.
