Abstract

This research discusses the leakage current in an insulating material made from polymer High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) contaminated with ammonia with variations in conditioning time ranging from 0 hours, 48 hours, 96 hours, 144 hours, 192 hours and 240 hours. The input voltage levels used are 220 V, 500 V and 1000 V. The leakage current that is measured for each conditioning time is the current flowing from the conductor to the ground through the surface of the insulator which has been contaminated with ammonia. This study uses an electrode system in the form of copper tape to circle the top and bottom sides of the insulator.. The results of this study indicate that the long conditioning time of HDPE insulators exposed to ammonia will cause the contaminant layer in the form of ammonia attached to the surface of the insulator to become thicker which increases the value of the leakage current through the surface of the insulator. The greater the input voltage value in HDPE insulators that have been contaminated with ammonia will increase the value of the leakage current. Key words: leakage current, polymer, contaminant, ammonia, ammonium hydroxide, High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
